Fins, Jaws and Fear – The White Shark
The sight of a fin in the water or the mention of a shark brings most people to the guttural images from Steven Spielberg’s “Jaws” . The success of the movie spawned years of suffering for the white shark and fear of the apex predator spread worldwide.
“Your Going to Need A Bigger Boat”
Filmmaker Dave Riggs posted a video of a large white shark circling a patrol boat in Australia. This amazing drone footage shows the boat and the shark from birds eye view. You can view the video and original story here courtesy of Fox News.
The boat is an estimates 27-feet ( 8. 5 meters ).The best estimates of the size of the shark in comparison to the boat are about 15 – 20 feet. The fictional shark in Jaws was 25-feet in length.
Whites of this size are not uncommon. Mauricio Hoyos Padilla posted a video of Deep Blue , the largest white shark ever caught on video back in 2015 near Guadalupe Island, Mexico.
This huge fish is estimated at 20 feet! Can you imagine!
If you stood the shark on it’s end it would reach the ceiling of a second floor of a building with standard 10′ floors.
It was THIS big!
Another extremely large white shark caught on camera in 1945 off Cojimar near Havana , Cuba is El Monstruo. Fisherman at this fishing village are seen with a large number of villagers surrounding the fish.
El Monstruo measured 21 feet and over 7,000 pounds making it the largest shark on record. However, not all scientists trust the measurements taken because as we all know, fishermen often exaggerate the size of their catches.
Upon further analysis scientists believe the shark that El Monstruo was about 15-16 feet. So much for that record. Looks like Deep Blue still rules!
